Only tracked services carry a live status, so knowing which service your item used matters. This guide covers how to track a Royal Mail parcel, what the reference number looks like, how long each service takes, and what every status update means.

Royal Mail Tracking Number Format
The classic Royal Mail tracked reference uses two letters, nine digits, and the GB country code at the end. Special Delivery and international tracked items follow the same style. If your item was sent by standard First or Second Class without a tracked add on, it will not have a live tracking reference, and only the delivery aim applies.
Royal Mail Tracking Statuses Explained
- Item received: Royal Mail has taken your item into the network at a Mail Centre.
- In transit / On its way: The item is moving through the Royal Mail network toward the delivery office.
- At delivery office: The item has reached your local office and is ready to be loaded for delivery.
- Out for delivery: The item is with the postman and should arrive that day.
- Something went wrong / We tried to deliver: A delivery attempt failed, and a card or pickup option follows.
- Delivered: The item has been delivered, sometimes with a signature on Special Delivery.
Royal Mail Delivery Times
- Special Delivery Guaranteed: next working day by a set time, with a signature.
- Tracked 24: aims for the next working day.
- Tracked 48: aims for two to three working days.
- International Tracked: varies widely by destination, often five to ten working days.
Delivery aims are targets, not guarantees, except for Special Delivery Guaranteed. Busy periods around holidays can extend the timeline.
Why Is My Royal Mail Parcel Delayed
- Weekend and bank holidays. Delivery aims count working days only, so weekends extend the wait.
- Customs on international items. Inbound parcels can pause while duty and paperwork are processed.
- High volume. Peak seasons and local disruptions can slow the network.
- Failed attempt. If no one is home for a signed item, it goes to the delivery office for collection.
If a Royal Mail tracked item shows no update well beyond its delivery aim, contact Royal Mail with the reference to raise an enquiry.
